What is your current title for work?
Project Coordinator
When did you start in the construction industry:
2022
When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:
I found it hard to figure out what I wanted to do after leaving high school, so I took a gap year and planned to travel – but COVID hit, which threw all my plans out! One of my good friends worked in the industry and after chatting with her about it, I decided to take the leap. I have loved it from the get-go – I have learnt a lot so far and have had some pretty cool opportunities.
What are you most passionate about?
Career development and growth is really important, and exploring all opportunities that come up. Pushing past your comfort zone, saying YES and giving everything a go benefits you greatly and you never know what it might lead to in the future.
Why did you join NAWIC?
I think it is important to support one another and connect with people in different areas of construction. NAWIC does a fabulous job of recognising success for women in construction and creating learning opportunities for everyone - whether that be social events or site visits. There is always something new and exciting to look forward to.
What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?
I’d love to see more women considering construction as a career path, and for a growing awareness of all the opportunities and avenues that construction can provide. When I was in school, construction was never put forward as an option to consider, and I am keen to see it more widely presented as an exciting and attractive career for the younger population.
Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:
Give everything a go and ask lots of questions. Don’t be afraid to jump in headfirst – it’s never as scary as it might seem! Everyone is there to help and support one another.
What is your favourite thing to do for fun:
I am happiest outdoors, usually with my headphones on and exploring the hills of Wellington – either on foot or by bike!
