What is your current title for work?
General Manager/Director at Hutt Gas and Plumbing Systems Ltd
How many years have you been in the construction industry:
34
When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:
My husband is an electrician and when he went out on his own I started doing his accounts and scheduling which lead me on to meeting with some plumbers and I started doing their admin work too. At about a year in I decided that if I was to continue doing the hours I was working I wanted to buy into the plumbing business - and that's how I started.
What are you most passionate about?
Apprentices and their journey, and advocating for women working in construction.
Why did you join NAWIC?
I was introduced to NAWIC by another member. I dealt with her at work and she told all about this amazing organisation that was primarily women who networked and enjoyed get togethers with a common theme of construction. We took part in the photo exhibition and it went from there!
What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?
I will love it when no one lifts and eyebrow when a female plumber rocks up, or expresses incredulity about a female being involved in a project as a leader, or when you don't have to go and ask a key to use the site toilets because there are so many women working on there that it is a given they have a full set of toilets for themselves!
Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:
What is your favourite thing to do for fun:
Spending time with my mates and family and doing cooking classes
