When did you start in the construction industry:
2022
When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:
I really didn’t know what I wanted to do after school, but I knew I thrived on challenges that allowed for creativity and working in a team environment. I took a chance on Civil Engineering, and it turned out to be the perfect balance with the opportunity to engage with communities around the world and make a positive contribution to the environment.
What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about breaking down barriers and representing women in all the spaces that are typically male dominated, be it sports or work. Many incredible women have paved the way before me, and I am confident that many more will follow.
Why did you join NAWIC?
Before my current role, I worked as an apprentice carpenter in France for two years. I was often the only woman on site, but funnily enough I gained so much confidence from that experience. I loved the surprise on some men’s faces when they saw me using a power tool, knowing that next time, they wouldn’t be as shocked to see a woman doing the same job. Joining NAWIC gives me the opportunity to share these stories and connect with others who have similar experiences in the industry. It feels like a safe community where you can come as you are and not be looked at twice, as we all know that feeling too well.
What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?
I hope to see more women gain the confidence to pursue a career in construction. It is such a powerful and rewarding field that everyone should have the opportunity to experience. We have so much talent to bring to the table – be brave and take a seat!
Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:
It is your life to live, so don’t let the fear of judgement stop you from doing the things you’re passionate about. Be an open-minded lifelong learner, there is in fact something new to learn everyday.
What is your favourite thing to do for fun:
Working in the workshop with my partner! We always have a project on the go as we love re-inventing spaces and bringing ideas to life. Topping it off with a swim in the sea, some gardening and playing the piano makes for my perfect day.
