Innovation and connection through NZ lockdown and beyond

Women in construction

As kiwis, we are often known for our innovative and ‘get on with it’ nature. Give us a challenge and we will rise to meet it with new ideas about the way we approach and overcome.

True to form, the crew and members at National Association of Women in Construction NZ (NAWIC) were on the ball.

“The NAWIC board had an important role during the difficult times of lockdown and beyond, we had members lose jobs, contracts cancelled and delayed, and others who worked at frenetic pace throughout. We felt our members needed our contact and support more than ever, and we responded to the new environment.” Stacey Mendonça, President

Changing gear quickly from traditional methods of meeting and operating, they were busier than usual during this time. The chapters and national board collectively offered various ways for members to find value and connection.

From hosting online local chapter education events, social events, professional development events with partner Switched On Learning, a “meet the national board” campaign on social media with some fun facts, through to several NAWIC bulletins to keep everyone connected and informed.

Plus, a brand-new chapter was launched in the Bay Of Plenty, bringing value and connection to the women in that area.

A snap shot of some of the stuff NAWIC members have been up to:
Business owner, Colleen Upton was interviewed on Radio NZ for comments about balancing the requests for plumbers to work while enforcing the alert level restrictions and keeping her staff safe plumber, Nikita Ward was interviewed on Seven Sharp showing the host Jeremy Wells that women can be plumbers
Building Apprentice, Sophie Jack was on TV, Living with the boss, showing children that women could be carpenters
President, Stacey Mendonca, was interviewed by Newshub on - Women in construction: Diversifying the sector in a post-COVID-19 world

Get connected, find support, learn, be inspired, and grow your networks by joining NAWIC.

Meet other women carving their own paths, across a wide range of occupations in the construction industry, through either our face to face meetings and local chapter events or by online live zoom meetings which are held regularly.
