Lisa Duston - NAWIC Excellence Awards Spotlight #7

Jen Tyson • December 12, 2021

Winner of the special merit award in professional woman of the year category

After our annual excellence awards in May 2021, we asked all of our award winners if they would like to share more of their story, to inspire and encourage others in their own journeys, and to perhaps enter the 2022 awards. A few were keen to do so. One of the ones shared was from;

Lisa Duston
HR Manager
Master Plumbers

Winner of the special merit award in professional woman of the year category

We asked Lisa to answer a few questions about her journey so far, here are her answers.

What inspired you to get into construction?

I started out in payroll in the construction sector but gravitated towards HR because I like people and enjoy the challenge of making things easier for businesses and their staff. After the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, I wanted to help rebuild my city and became HR Advisor for Fletcher Earthquake Recovery (EQR) before becoming HR Manager at Master Plumbers.

What are you most passionate about in the industry? or what drives you to be involved?

I am passionate about changing the culture and the old mindset of "she'll be right'! Tradies are a good bunch of buggers doing great work for New Zealand. I like being able to help them with their businesses - especially when it comes to supporting their people management skills and ensuring their wellbeing is a priority!

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

I'd like to see women in trades not having to work so hard to fit into a business just because they're female. Female apprentice numbers are increasing, but there's still a long way to go! I'd like it to become normal to see capable, qualified women on the tools, working on building sites, managing other tradespeople and owning their own plumbing or construction businesses.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction

  • Hang in there - it can be a man's world but show them what you've got.
  • Show them that you are on their side and they will warm to you.
  • Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself and what you believe in!
  • Believe in yourself - you can do it!

What is your favourite thing to do for fun?

Catching up with friends and family, red wine and music.

What has winning this award meant to you?

I love that my workplace nominated me in the first place. It was wonderful to be acknowledged by my team for the work that I am doing.

Being selected as a finalist by NAWIC and winning the Special Merit Award on the night was an incredible experience. There are so many outstanding women in construction doing amazing things, so it was a privilege to be picked to receive the award.
