What is your current title for work?
Transport Planner/Engineer
When did you start in the construction industry:
2019
When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:
I didn’t! Like the rest of my working journey, I stumbled into it.
I’ve always enjoyed learning and following my curiosity has often landed me in spaces where I’ll be out of my comfort zone. To me, this is where the greatest opportunities for growth, learning, play and innovation are, because you are figuring out yourself and the ‘outside world’ at the same time. We tend to get hung up on all sorts of things – titles, (gender) roles, norms, categories, you name it – I find that just following your own drive and interests often offers the greatest benefit, because you’re open and invested in what you do.
What are you most passionate about?
Learning, and creating opportunities to learn and exchange. This can be deeply uncomfortable and confronting, because it implies a willingness to put things to the test, including your own boundaries, beliefs, convictions and will. It’s never boring, though.
Why did you join NAWIC?
To connect with wāhine across the sector and region.
What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?
For the breadth and diversity of women’s strengths, insights, and perspectives to be celebrated, honoured and valued.
Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:
Back yourself and continue to show up for what you love most. You may at times feel discouraged by setbacks, but these are the greatest opportunities to re-assess and reaffirm the way you want to shape your path.
What is your favourite thing to do for fun:
My favorite thing is to get into the outdoors, be it in the bush, hills, plains, rivers or beaches. I also just love reading a good book or listening to tunes, doing some sketching or sharing a coffee or kai with friends.
