OLIVIA KIESER

NAWIC TARANAKI TREASURER

What is your current title for work?

Graduate Civil Engineer

When did you start in the construction industry:

2021

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

My first exposure to the construction industry was working on the rail over the summer holiday while I was at university studying civil engineering. I immediately fell in love with construction and the fact that you could be a part of building something that would impact so many people’s lives on a day-to-day basis.

What are you most passionate about?

Everything transport. Nothing gets me more fired up than a good discussion about public transport, road safety and the ways we can improve our current transport system.

Why did you join NAWIC?

Working in a male dominated industry like construction means that I have often been the only woman on a project which meant that for much of my early career I was lacking role models and community.

The first time I attended a NAWIC event, I met so many other women in the industry who had similar struggles and frustrations to me, and who could show me the way forward. This community and built in support network is still the biggest draw of NAWIC for me.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

I hope that more young women see construction as a viable pathway, and that the industry continues to become a more welcoming and comfortable space for women to work in.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

I think my best piece of advice is to take whatever opportunities come your way, even if they are out of your comfort zone.

Construction is such an incredible space to work in. It is such a broad industry, and you really can go anywhere and do anything.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Anything out on or in the water – surfing, scuba diving, swimming, kayaking, but if the weather is really miserable I’ll rather read a book.
