SOPHIE MILLER

TE WHANGANUI-A-TARA / WELLINGTON TREASURER (TRAINEE)

What is your current title for work?

Junior Quantity Surveyor

When did you start in the construction industry:

2023

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I decided I wanted to work in construction in my final year of high school when struggling to pick out a university course of study. The Bachelor of Building Science have me a broad base of construction knowledge and I really enjoyed every aspect!

What are you most passionate about?

I really love the impact we can have in people’s lives through the built environment! I think it can make such a difference to someone’s working day by having that working day in a nice new office, or build a place someone will call home.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I think women in construction being connected and lifting each other up in the industry is really important. NAWIC is a great way to support the work that women in our local and national industry are doing, as well as increasing our learning together through conversation and site visits.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

I would love to see more young women looking at construction as a whole bunch of exciting career avenues. There tends to be a lot of stereotyping around who can be expected to be seen on a construction site, but there are so many differing aspects of and inputs into construction that most people could find a role that suits them.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Just give it a go! If it’s not for you, it’s not the end of the world, there are so many ways to pivot in the industry and tailor your work day to what you excel at.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

I love to travel! There’s nothing quite like going “Hey that’s a cool building” and annoying everyone you’re traveling with for the 50th time!
