One of the key ways we drive towards our vision of being the ‘Leading voice for women in construction’ is by shining a light on career journeys, and sharing the wins and success of Women in the sector, in the hopes that others will be encouraged and inspired on their own journeys.
Recently we had another one of our members recognised in the sector.
Today’s celebratory blog is about the outgoing Chapter Chair of the thriving Wellington chapter, Helen Moate.
At the recent NZIOB Awards, Helen won the Consultants category, which was sponsored by NAWIC. Incoming Canterbury Chapter Chair, Kirsty Hopewell, was there to present the award on behalf of NAWIC.
Helen’s full time role is as a Senior Project Manager at The Building Intelligence Group. Her involvement in NAWIC has been many volunteer hours, like all of our chapters, she has contributed so much to the chapter but also to the National operations team, all while juggling a full time career and family.

The project in focus for this award was, Te Wao Nui, Wellington Children's Hospital, Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington.
The citation reads,
“Helen’s role on this project in Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington was unusual as she co-ordinated all parties and stakeholders to the project. This included donors, government, subject matter experts, contractors, architects and more.
Helen’s referee said she had to walk a fine line between all stakeholders and was effectively “the glue” in the project.
Helen not only took on this role in a very considered manner, but it was also her commitment to the wider construction industry that played an important aspect in his winning this award. Helen is a member of a number of building industry organisations and a mentor to many starting out in their careers.
She also has a very special commitment to mental health and physical disabilities and injected that into this project. During the project she addressed the differing abilities and challenges for those working on the site to make things easier for them.
In total Helen has spent over four years working on this project which was a steep learning curve where she had to deal with many different and often conflicting roles. She is proud of what she achieved in bringing people together.
Helen is very clearly a people person with empathy and humanity at the core of everything she does and exceptional skills in management and leadership.
Helen was always aware of what was going on in people’s lives and worked to make sure they were supported on site and off. The judges said they could see it wasn’t just about bringing people together for the sake of the project but also recognising the individual needs of the team members.”
